A bi-fold door is a type of door which opens by folding back in sections or panels. These folding doors are known as ‘bi-fold doors’, in spite of them most often having more than two panels. A more, maybe older term is ‘concertina’ doors, inspired by the musical instrument of the same name. Historically folding doors were already known by the Romans as excavations in Pompeii have revealed. Romans disliked single-leaf doors and wherever possible, both inside and out, they used double or even folding doors.
Today, bi-fold doors create an incredible open space and an unobscured view of your garden. When closed, they leave a wall of light and an amazing feeling of spaciousness. Unlike a sliding patio door, that remains only half open, Bi-fold doors slide fully open, folding either left or right to beautifully merge your house and garden. Bi-fold doors are typically made up of between two and seven panels and always incorporate a ‘primary’ or ‘traffic’ door that can be opened on its own for complete flexibility.
